Responsibility: Are Glenn Beck and Greg Mortenson Violators?

If the news stories are true, there’s a serious violation of Love coming down.

How did you feel when you read these headlines about Glenn Beck or Greg Mortenson?  Both men have a big following of supporters and devoted fans.  We’re not siding with either one, but we are standing on the side of Responsibility.  How did you feel when you considered that either of these prominent personalities might commit “content theft” or make up parts of a bestselling non-fiction book?   Did you sense that Love had been violated; trust and loyalty were breached; we were betrayed?  Wouldn’t you agree that Responsibility is at the heart of this matter?

Responsibility is the 4th basic requirement and the high point or Apex of Love; it ties everything together. Added to the 3 other requirements we’ve been discussing, we now have the 4 Pillars of Love:

  • Respect –Love’s Foundation
  • Care—Love’s Action
  • Knowledge—Love’s Director
  • Responsibility—Love’s Apex

What does Responsibility bring to the table?    Trust, Loyalty and Service, always under the umbrella of The Intent to Please. We have a “need” to  connect with others, to depend on them.  A bonding takes place that blossoms into Service. We rely on others including Glenn Beck or Greg Mortenson to fulfill their Responsibility to us.  Others rely on us to be responsible too, so there’s never an end to the cycle.

When Love is violated, the repercussions to the violator as well as to the violated can be long-range, long-term damage….possibly fatal.  Will Beck or Mortenson be able to defend themselves, rectify the wrongs, or regain the Trust and Loyalty of their supporters?  In a year or two, will anyone even remember?

On the other hand, annually at this time of year millions of people around the world reflect on the repercussions of the deep betrayal by a friend nearly 2000 years ago, and the consequent supreme act of Service…..“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
